Alta Via E6 Dolomites traverse
The quiet high route from St Lorenzen to Forni di Sopra
Alta Via E6 follows the first section of the Path of Silence from St Lorenzen to Forni di Sopra. First published in 1972, the route is presented by Globo Alpin as deliberately different from the well-known and heavily visited Dolomites trails.
The path is not always easy to identify, particularly in the southern section. Other people are rarely encountered in the Dolomiti Friulane nature park, where Globo Alpin mentions ibex, chamois, several pairs of eagles and an exceptional variety of flowers.
Although the route seldom exceeds 2,000 metres, it crosses rugged and wild rock scenery filled with pinnacles, towers and obelisk-like formations. Accommodation alternates between mountain huts and welcoming inns. The culture of the German-speaking enclaves of Ploden and Zahre is also part of the region’s character.

About the region
Alta Via E6 crosses a particularly quiet and unspoilt part of the Dolomites. Its first section runs from St Lorenzen to Forni di Sopra and enters the Dolomiti Friulane nature park. Globo Alpin notes that the route, especially in its southern part, is not always easy to identify and that other hikers are rarely encountered. Although the journey generally stays below 2,000 metres, the scenery remains rugged and wild, with numerous rock towers and pinnacles. Ibex, chamois, eagles and a rich variety of flowers are mentioned in the nature park. The German-speaking enclaves of Ploden and Zahre add a distinctive cultural element.
