E5 Alpine Crossing – hiking from Oberstdorf towards Merano
Few routes represent the idea of crossing the Alps on foot as clearly as the E5. The best-known Alpine section links the Oberstdorf area with Tyrol and continues towards South Tyrol and Merano. Sörmland Outdoor offers different E5 travel formats, allowing you to choose not only the route but also how independently or socially you want to travel.
Three ways to experience the E5
Self-guided E5
For experienced hikers who want independence while still benefiting from an organised journey. You hike independently and retain more freedom over your daily rhythm.
E5 with luggage transport
This version adds comfort to the Alpine crossing. Where luggage transfer is included, you carry less on selected stages, while the ascent, descent and long mountain days remain part of the challenge.
E5 for solo travellers
Arrive independently but hike with a group of like-minded travellers. This guided format combines professional leadership with companionship and is designed for people who do not want to experience the E5 alone.
The classic idea: Oberstdorf – Tyrol – Merano
The best-known E5 Alpine crossing travels from the northern edge of the Alps through changing mountain ranges and valleys towards South Tyrol. Landscape, altitude and accommodation change from day to day. That continuous journey is the essence of the experience.
Not every E5 itinerary is the same
The term E5 Alpine Crossing covers different route variations. Stages, transfers, accommodation and luggage arrangements can differ, including between our own programmes. Compare the actual itinerary and inclusions, not only the start and finish.
Which E5 journey suits you?
Choose the self-guided format if you value independence and have the necessary mountain experience. Luggage support adds comfort. Solo travellers who prefer companionship and professional leadership can choose the guided group journey.
Fitness & technical requirements
Several consecutive hiking days, long ascents and descents and changing weather require endurance. Depending on the itinerary, alpine trails and more demanding sections may be included. Check the specific tour page for exact requirements.
Accommodation & luggage
Depending on the E5 format, you may stay in huts, inns or hotels. Luggage arrangements also differ: some journeys require you to carry your own kit, while others include transfers on selected sections.
